J. Michael KoontzArt is a way of life for me, having worked in some aspect of media arts since college.

I graduated from Winthrop University in 2003 with a BFA in studio art with a photography concentration and worked as a photo lab manager for a year. I’ve also worked as a professional photographer, taking school portraits and special event photos.

I taught high school art for five years, during which time I pioneered the digital media program after securing grant money from the state. Also while teaching, I earned a M.Ed. in instructional technology from American Intercontinental University (2007.)

I’ve spent the last seven years doing freelance design work, and I’m currently a work study employee at ITT Technical Institute, where I plan to graduate with an associate of applied science in visual communications in December 2011. I work as an instructor’s assistant during class lab time as well as a tutor for students who need one-on-one help with graphic design projects and software.

Throughout my education and work experience, I have also developed a versatility that allows me to work in a variety of different styles and across multiple media – including print, Web, and animation. My knowledge in design and productivity software includes the Microsoft Office suite, the Adobe CS5 suite, 3ds Max and more, as well as the Web languages HTML, XHTML, and CSS.

When it comes to design projects, I am extremely meticulous about the little details. Layout alignment and color matching are things that when properly executed, can make all the difference, so I strive to make sure those small particulars are perfect.

My aim is to complete any project right the first time, and understanding the wants and needs of my clients is essential before I begin an assignment. That way I can produce the best quality work in as short of a turnaround time as possible.
